About Overtime Pay

Overtime pay is calculated based on federal and state labor laws. The Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) requires employers to pay non-exempt employees 1.5 times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek.

  • Federal (FLSA): 1.5x after 40 hours per week
  • California: 1.5x after 8 hrs/day or 40 hrs/week, 2x after 12 hrs/day
  • Alaska: 1.5x after 8 hrs/day or 40 hrs/week
  • Colorado: 1.5x after 12 hrs/day or 40 hrs/week
  • Some states have daily overtime requirements in addition to weekly
  • Always check your state's specific labor laws and your employment contract

After you crunch payroll scenarios here, PayWise breaks the results into net pay estimates so you can communicate changes with confidence.
