Hours and Minutes Calculator
Add up (or take away) a list of durations without carrying minutes in your head. Great for totalling a week of daily hours.
- Decimal hours
- 22.50
- Minutes
- 1350
Adding time is base-60 arithmetic
Minutes roll over at 60, not 100, so a normal calculator gives wrong answers: 7.45 + 8.20 = 15.65 on a calculator, but 7 h 45 min + 8 h 20 min is 16 h 5 min. Either add in h:mm and carry every 60 minutes, or convert to decimal hours first (7.75 + 8.33 = 16.08).
Working from clock-in and clock-out times rather than durations? The time card calculator does the subtraction for each day as well.
Questions people ask
How do I add hours and minutes?
Add the hours and the minutes separately, then turn every 60 minutes into an hour. 3:45 + 2:30 = 5 h 75 min = 6 h 15 min.
How do I subtract hours and minutes?
If the minutes you are taking away are larger, borrow an hour as 60 minutes. 5:10 − 2:45 becomes 4:70 − 2:45 = 2:25.
Can I type decimal hours?
Yes. Type 1.5 for an hour and a half, or use 1h 30m, 90m or 1:30. They all mean the same thing.
How do I total hours for a week?
Enter each day’s hours on its own line. The total shows as hours:minutes and decimal hours, ready for a timesheet.
