What counts as your “regular rate”

Federal overtime is 1.5× the regular rate, which is not always your base hourly wage. Under the FLSA it includes shift differentials and non-discretionary bonuses (for attendance or production, say) spread over the hours they cover. Discretionary gifts and holiday pay for time not worked are excluded. If you earn extras, your true overtime rate can be higher than base × 1.5 (Department of Labor, Fact Sheet #56A). This is general information, not payroll advice.

Questions people ask

How do I calculate time and a half?

Multiply your hourly rate by 1.5. At $18 an hour, time and a half is $27. To find overtime pay, multiply that by the overtime hours: 5 hours × $27 = $135.

What is double time?

Twice your regular hourly rate. Federal law never requires it, but California does for hours over 12 in a workday and over 8 on the seventh consecutive day of a workweek. Some union contracts and holiday policies also pay it.

What is time and a half for $15, $20 and $25 an hour?

$15 → $22.50; $20 → $30.00; $25 → $37.50. The table on this page lists common rates.

Is time and a half paid on holidays?

Not by federal law. The FLSA does not require extra pay for weekends or holidays, only for hours over 40 in a workweek. Holiday premium pay depends on your employer’s policy or contract.
